Trinidad and Tobago - CMS Party No. 127
CMS is pleased to welcome Trinidad and Tobago as the 127th Party to the Convention with effect from 1st December. Trinidad and Tobago is situated in the Caribbean and this island republic shares maritime borders with Barbados, Grenada, Guyana and Venezuela. The country has an area of just over 5,000 km2 with the two main islands giving the country its name accounting for 98 per cent.

Third Meeting of CMS Energy Task Force Showcases Actions to Reconcile Energy and Biodiversity
The Third Meeting of the Multi-Stakeholder Energy Task Force (ETF) on Reconciling Selected Energy Sector Developments with Migratory Species Conservation reviewed conservation activities already completed in its Workplan 2018-2020 and highlighted further action points. The meeting took place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on 16 November 2018 in the margins of the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP14). It was chaired by CBD National Focal Point of Egypt, Dr Moustafa Fouda.
Whale Watching - New Resource Shows How To Do It Right
To encourage best practice in the growing whale watching industry worldwide, two intergovernmental organizations have launched a comprehensive handbook. The free online resource provides information on species, advice on locations and guidance for interested whale watchers regarding responsible behaviour. The joint initiative by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the UN Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) has resulted in the online Whale Watching Handbook which offers comprehensive, impartial and free advice.

African States Make Long-term Commitment to Conserve Their Largest Carnivores
More than 30 countries hosting African Wild Dog, Cheetah, Leopard and Lion met in Bonn from 5 to 8 November 2018 to establish the African Carnivore Initiative. The initiative constitutes the first Africa-wide commitment towards saving African Wild Dog, Cheetah, Leopard and Lion. Habitat loss and fragmentation, prey depletion, retaliatory killing of carnivores by owners of livestock and increasing trade in lion specimens and live cheetah are the main reasons for these animals’ rapid decline across most of Africa.
