Members of the Energy Task Force, including the CMS and AEWA Secretariats, BirdLife International, and the German Ministry for the Environment (BMUB) joined forces at the UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change Conference to raise awareness of the importance of reconciling migratory species conservation with the deployment of renewable energy and power lines globally.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species is pleased to announce the release of the third draft of the Indicator Factsheets for the Strategic Plan for Migratory Species 2015-2023.

Today we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. This year CBD and its partners want to highlight the interdependence between biodiversity and sustainable tourism. When most people think about tourism, they often think of organized tours or crowded beaches. However, tourism can also contribute to creating a sustainable future.

There was standing room only in the Cappella Farnese in Bologna’s medieval Palazzo d’Accursio for the fifth annual Benefit Concert held as part of the celebration of World Migratory Bird Day. The magnificent setting of the chapel with its 16th century frescos by Prospero Fontana was just the entrée in what proved to be a feast for the senses, as the Corale Lirica San Rocco enthralled an enthusiastic audience with a repertoire covering arias from Verdi’s Macbeth and Oberto Conte di San Bonifacio, Ponchielli’s La Gioconda and Donizetti’s Elisir d’Amore and Lucia di Lammermoor.

Achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement requires scaling up of renewable energy whilst ensuring ecological integrity and biodiversity protection. Species conservation is one of the challenges. CMS has established a Multi-stakeholder Task Force on Reconciling Selected Energy Sector Developments with Migratory Species Conservation – the Energy Task Force - to address this issue internationally.

The CAFF Secretariat (Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna) has presented a strategy and action plan to prevent invasive species from entering the Arctic. Climate change and human activity increase the threat of invasive alien species to the Arctic. These species are a globally significant driver of biodiversity loss including migratory species and habitat degradation.

Migratory birds face an increasing number of threats while traveling huge distances. Their intercontinental flyways include key stopover sites that are essential for migratory birds to rest and refuel before continuing their journey. Celebrated in over 70 countries on or around 10 May, World Migratory Bird Day 2017 highlights the need for international cooperation to conserve migratory birds and their habitats for the benefit of mankind. The theme this year is “Their Future is Our Future – A Healthy Planet for Migratory Birds and People” which is closely linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At the recent annual conference of the European Cetacean Society in Middelfart, Denmark, CMS staff member Heidrun Frisch-Nwakanma was honoured by being presented with the Mandy McMath ECS Conservation Award. The ECS Award, named after passionate Welsh conservationist Mandy McMath who passed away in 2012, is given for an outstanding contribution to the field of marine mammal conservation and/or welfare, with particular emphasis on contributions to environmental education and/or to conservation in practice.

The Corale Lirica San Rocco will be giving a benefit concert in Bologna on 13 May, as part of the annual celebrations of World Migratory Bird Day. The operatic choir, which gave a concert in Bonn the last four years, will now perform in its home city. The matinee will start at 11.00 hrs in the historical Cappella Farnese di Palazzo D’Accursio.

Vilm, Germany (May 4, 2017)– Experts have for the first time mapped the distribution and movement corridors of migratory mammals in combination with threats from linear infrastructure, such as railways, roads, pipelines, and border fences, across the entire Central Asian region.
